How “Hope Unfolds” Was Created — Turning News into Flowers of Hope

There are paintings that begin with a clear image in the artist’s mind. And there are paintings that grow slowly, through thoughts, emotions, materials and life itself.

Hope Unfolds belongs to the second kind.

This original mixed media artwork is part of my Paper Garden series — a body of work created from my need to respond to the enormous amount of information and negative news surrounding us every day.

I often feel that we live in a constant stream of information. News reaches us from everywhere: our phones, newspapers, television and social media. Much of it is difficult, frightening or simply exhausting.

I cannot change everything that happens in the world.

But I can choose what I add to it.

And this became the starting point for Paper Garden.

From Newspaper Pages to Flowers

For this series, I began using newspaper pages as part of my collage art.

The newspaper is not simply a material. It is a symbol.

It represents information, headlines, events, opinions and the constant flow of news that surrounds us.

I cut, tear, layer and transform these pages, allowing fragments of information to lose their original context and become something completely different.

Instead of headlines, they become petals.

Instead of information, they become flowers.

This transformation is an important part of my creative process. I am not trying to erase the difficult things happening in the world. I am trying to create another possibility alongside them.

Something alive.

Something beautiful.

Something hopeful.

The Flower in the Centre

In Hope Unfolds, the central flower is deliberately different.

It is bright, powerful and full of energy.

It rises from the darker newspaper flowers around it, almost as if it is pushing its way through the noise.

For me, this flower represents hope.

Not a naïve belief that everything will always be easy or beautiful.

A more resilient kind of hope — the decision to keep growing even when the circumstances around you are difficult.

The flower does not fight the darkness.

It simply grows towards the light.

That is what makes this painting deeply personal to me.

Why This Work Matters to Me

I see something of myself in this flower.

Life has taught me that we cannot always choose what happens to us. We cannot control every circumstance, every loss, every change or every difficult chapter.

But we can choose what we do with what we have experienced.

We can transform it.

We can grow through it.

We can create something new from it.

This is one of the reasons I do not work in one fixed style. My contemporary art changes as I change. Different series emerge from different periods of my life, different emotions and different questions.

Sometimes my work is colourful and energetic. Sometimes it becomes dark and dramatic. Sometimes I need almost complete simplicity.

The process is always honest.

Art as a Conversation

My work is not intended to give the viewer one fixed interpretation.

I believe that art with meaning can become a conversation between the artist and the person looking at it.

You may see hope in Hope Unfolds.

Someone else may see resilience, new beginnings, personal growth or simply the beauty of a flower.

All of those interpretations are valid.

That openness is important to me.

I create the work from something personal, but once it leaves my artist studio, it belongs to another space — another home, another life, another story.

That is the moment when the painting begins its next chapter.

Creating Hope from the Noise

Hope Unfolds reminds me why I continue to create.

I may be only one small person in a very complicated world. I cannot change everything around me.

But I can make something.

I can take a newspaper page filled with information and turn it into a flower.

I can take difficult emotions and transform them into colour, texture and form.

And perhaps someone looking at the finished original artwork will feel a little more hopeful.

For me, that is enough.

Hope Unfolds.

And sometimes, hope is simply the courage to keep reaching for the light.
